Nationwide Strike Disrupts Transport, Schools Throughout Italy

(MENAFN) A large-scale strike involving workers from multiple sectors swept across Italy on Friday, disrupting transportation, education, and media operations after unions called for coordinated action over various labor-related grievances.

In the transport sector, services were significantly affected in a number of northern cities such as Milan, Monza, and Novara. Employees staged walkouts to protest issues including privatization and subcontracting, while also demanding better working conditions, particularly improvements in safety and hygiene standards.

In Milan, metro operations came to a standstill, leaving many commuters unexpectedly stranded. Meanwhile, smaller demonstrations took place outside bus depots, where workers and union representatives gathered to express their concerns.

The education sector was also impacted, as teachers and school staff joined the strike. They called for measures to address job insecurity, fill unoccupied positions, and reform the process for appointing school principals. As a result, many primary and secondary schools suspended classes in several regions.

Media workers participated as well, launching a 24-hour strike that disrupted news production. The action was organized in response to long-standing labor contract issues, with unions highlighting the failure to renew agreements that had expired roughly a decade ago, along with broader concerns over employment conditions.

The strike caused major interruptions in news coverage. The state broadcaster replaced live broadcasts on its news channel with pre-recorded material, while the national news agency temporarily ceased operations.

Additionally, several television news outlets and newspapers paused updates in solidarity with the strike.
