Hungary Links Ukraine EU Accession Progress to Minority Rights Deal

(MENAFN) Hungary has indicated that it may support the opening of Ukraine’s first European Union accession cluster if Kyiv fulfills agreed commitments related to minority rights, according to statements made by the Hungarian prime minister.

Following what was described as a comprehensive agreement between Hungary and Ukraine, Prime Minister Peter Magyar said the deal focuses on expanding linguistic, educational, cultural, and political rights for more than 100,000 ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region.

According to reports, Magyar noted that the agreement was reached after several weeks of technical-level negotiations between officials from Budapest and Kyiv. Representatives of Hungarian minority political and religious organizations in Transcarpathia also participated in the discussions.

He stated that Ukraine has committed to incorporating the agreed measures into its domestic legal framework in the near future, which would significantly expand rights in education, culture, language use, and political participation for the minority community.

Magyar further explained that these commitments are expected to be included in Ukraine’s action plan submitted to the European Union. If implemented, Hungary would be prepared to support the opening of Ukraine’s first EU accession negotiation cluster.

However, he also reiterated Hungary’s continued opposition to accelerating Ukraine’s EU accession process. He added that even in the event of long-term progress, Hungary’s final approval would depend on a legally binding referendum if Ukraine were to complete all accession chapters within the next decade to fifteen years.
